The fates of two families--one of a successful artist, Bill, and the other of Leo, the art critic who discovered him--are intertwined over many years of friendship. When his son dies in an accident, Leo's grief overwhelms him. Then Bill dies of a heart attack, Bill's son Mark gets involved in an unsavory downtown club world, and Leo is getting older and finding that the world that was once so magical and lucky has become a very different place.
