The Dream Life

This academic study of America in the 1960s explores how movies influenced culture and how culture, simultaneously, influenced movies. Village Voice film critic Hoberman places films such as THE WILD BUNCH, DIRTY HARRY, and SHAMPOO into the political context of the era, exposing the often contradictory mood of the country as reflected in their cinematic visions. He discusses mass media as both a method for influencing society and a tool for exposing the hypocrisies inherent in the existing political structures, and in doing so provides a vivid portrait of the United States at a time of political upheaval and social revolution.
