5 Things to Ask Before Hiring Your Divorce Lawyer
Before you hire your divorce lawyer, it’s important you ask a few essential questions as it can make a huge difference in the results of your case. You want to be prepared and get all the information you can beforehand.
1) Ask about their fee structure.
One important thing to find out is the attorney fees. You will want to ask some questions along the lines of –
What are your up front retainer fee?
What is your hourly rate?
Do you charge different fees according to who is working on the case, such as paralegals or other associates? If so, what are their rates?
Other fee related questions you want to ask is if there are extra fees if your case goes to divorce court.
2) Ask about their history with similar cases.
If you feel for some reason your situation is particularly specific, make sure you find out if the attorney has experience winning similar cases. Also, don’t be afraid to ask whether or not they know your spouse or the attorney your spouse has hired. Make sure they also have experience dealing with child support, spousal support and other types of matters.
3) Ask about the potential outcome of your case.
This is a fair question to ask, although your potentional divorce lawyer may not be able to answer this directly for you. However, this doesn’t mean they can’t provide you with some insights as to how the divorce proceedings will go.
4) Ask about their knowledge of your spouse’s attorney.
This is an important question, especially if they can give you insight as to how the attorney works to settle matters. You can also find out if the opposing attorney is open to negotiations and out of court settlements.
5) Ask about how they will communicate with you.
If you have a simple question related to when you need to appear in court or upcoming appointments, you do not necessarily have to speak directly with the attorney. However if you have specific questions related to the case, find out what is the best way for you to get in touch with them whether it’s by email or phone. Also be sure to ask how quickly you will hear from them.
These questions simply scratch the surface but it’s an excellent start for finding the right attorney for your divorce proceedings.
