5 Self Storage Tips for Beginners
If you are interested in a self storage facility to store some of your items indefinitely, you want to make sure that you have a good experience. You want your belongings to be safe and secure. You need to consider what you have and what specific considerations you have for these items.
Are they personal or business related? These differences can determine what kind of storage unit you will require. You need to know the amount you want to store. You wouldn’t want to pay for additional space, but at the same time, you do not want to underestimate. Let’s take a look at some self storage tips to help you make better decisions.
1. Use Quality Materials
Depending on how long you need a storage space for, you may want to invest in quality materials. If you intend to have something stored for an extended period of time, some things like cardboard boxes may deteriorate after some time. Make sure to keep this in mind and use good quality boxes, packing tape and other forms of protection like bubble wrap.
2. Mix Heavy & Light
Try not to make a box too heavy. It might be worth it to mix some heavy and light items and pack this in the same box. For example, if you packed a box full of books, this is going to be incredibly heavy. Place some books at the bottom and add some lighter things on top of that.
3. Use Labels
Use labels on your boxes to keep things organized. In the event you need to find a specific item, you can easily grab it without turning the place upside down! If possible, label the box with all the contents within for complete organization and simplicity later on.
4. Things You Should Not Store
There are of course, certain items that cannot be stored. Make sure you speak to the facility to find out what can and cannot be stored. As a general rule of thumb, some things that should not be stored are:
- Live animals
- Toxic material
- Flammable liquids
You will probably need to sign a contract and it should state the things that are out of bounds.
5. Stacking Boxes
It is a good idea to always place the heavier boxes at the bottom. You can then place lighter boxes on them. Otherwise, you will end up damaging your own belongings. If you can, when you stack and arrange your boxes, try to make a little walkway between stacked boxes. It may not always be possible to do this, but if it is, you should. This can be really convenient and save you a lot of trouble later, especially when you need something. With this in mind, you can also plan ahead. If you know you will need access to something fairly regularly, then keep it near the front for the sake of convenience.
Be organized and think of convenience. Plan ahead. Also keep in mind that some items you possess may need specific conditions. If you have something like this, arrange to get a climate-controlled self storage unit. Consider getting insurance as well.
