5 Reasons to Support The Gairdner Foundation
Founded in the year 1957 by James Arthur Gairdner, the Gairdner Foundation is a non-profit organization which is dedicated towards recognizing and rewarding excellent achievements in biomedical research.
Beginning in 1959 when the first award was given, Gairdner Awards are considered one of the most prestigious medical awards in Canada, celebrating and recognizing the best and most successful biomedical researchers.
The Gairdner Foundation is mainly focused towards rewarding and recognizing medical researchers who have contributed to improving the quality of human life. With a mandate that encourages hard work, research, and the well-being of others, there are obvious benefits to contributing regularly and supporting the Gairdner Foundation.
1. To continue the excellent work in biomedical research
The Gairdner Foundation is doing an excellent job in identifying and rewarding those who have proven the most talented in biomedical research. 373 awards have been given to laureates from 30 different countries. 87 of them have also received the noble prize. An award from the Gairdner Foundation has become an ultimate goal for biomedical professionals and is a matter of huge prestige.
The organization is doing a terrific job in keeping the spirit of biomedical research alive. The efforts of the Gairdner Foundation need to be continued but it does require a substantial amount of funds to do so. Government grants and private donations are appreciated and helpful, they can only do so much. Therefore, donations from the public are needed to keep the legacy of the Gairdner Foundation going.
2. Support for organizing events
The Gairdner Foundation has been organizing events successfully in different medical fields. For example, in April 2018 it organized a heart conference in Ottawa which focused on new-age medication in cardiovascular disease. This conference highlighted the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease in a more targeted manner. This event brought together scientists from different domains of study and was affective in bringing the issue to the international platform.
This conference is a prime example of the great organization and collaboration that the Gairdner Foundation does and it can lead to increased recognition and solutions to the problem being explored. However, these conferences have many costs involved and are largely driven by donations from the public.
3. Inspiration for future leaders
The awards and recognition provided by the Gairdner Foundation are great inspirations for next generation researchers. They motivate them to work harder and strive for success, leading to more development and innovative solutions in the biomedical field.
The Gairdner Foundation is also engaged in several outreach programs to encourage young professionals in the field of biomedical study. It gives an international and prestigious stage to young professionals to showcase their talent and get recognized. None of this is possible without support and assistance in the form of donations.
4. Gairdner National Program
The Gairdner National Program is organized every year in the month of October and consists of lectures to students at universities across Canada. It includes the most recent awardees of Gairdner awards along with those from past years.
The Gairdner National Program delivers academic lectures to students and medical professionals in their areas of expertise. This program is important because it encourages students to pursue careers in medical research. However, travel can be expensive and the Gairdner Foundation does need assistance in allowing the program to continue. Therefore, public support is needed to ensure the Gairdner National Program is able to continue to influence and encourage future medical researchers across the country.
5. Backbone of advancements
Gairdner award recipients are the founder of many medical and pharmaceutical advances that have played significant roles in the medical field and saving the lives of many around the world. Some of their discoveries are PET scanning, MRI imaging, CT scans, organ transplant drugs, HPV vaccine for cervical cancer, treatments for breast cancer and many more.
With such accomplishments, it is easy to see why on should support the Gairdner Foundation. Without these medical breakthroughs, many more people would be ill and losing their lives. Contributing to the Gairdner Foundation will assist those in the medical research field, giving them the tools they need to make a difference and succeed.
